Radiofrequency ablation of osteoid osteoma

An osteoid osteoma is a benign (non-cancerous), small tumor that usually grows in the long bones of a person's lower extremities. Radiofrequency ablation, or RFA, is a minimally invasive technique that shrinks the size of tumors, nodules or other growths in the body. RFA is used to treat a range of conditions, including benign and malignant tumors, chronic venous insufficiency in the legs, as well as chronic back and neck pain. We treat most patients with osteoid osteomas using a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure called radiofrequency ablation. During this procedure we direct a probe into the tumor and heat it up for several minutes using radiofrequency energy, which destroys it.
