Muscle biopsy is a minor surgical procedure that involves making an incision in the skin to obtain a few small pieces of the underlying muscle for detailed histologic, histochemical, or biochemical examination. A core needle biopsy uses a larger needle to remove a larger tissue sample than a fine needle biopsy. The bone specimen is obtained after skin puncture by a needle or trephine. It can either by incisional, in which case only a representative specimen is removed from the lesion, in which the lesion is excised en-bloc.
